The winning piece submitted in the contest held by the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation was a painting of an African American female astronaut flying in space that Sanyu Kalyesubula says is Jemison. Kalyesubula who is homeschooled learned about Jemison during her studies. Jemison was the first Black woman to travel into space.

Students in grades 2-6 submitted artwork that celebrated the achievements of notable Black figures. The entries were judges on artistic ability, coloring skills as well as creativity.
